i pray
\nfor all of us that are scared
\nfor all of us that are lonely
\nfor all of us that don’t know what to do
\nthat can’t get up, not even one more time<\/p>\n
for all of us
\nthat are hurting right now.
\nfor all of those poor mothers
\nand those poor children, motherless.
\nfor all of the fathers
\nfor all those who are struggling<\/p>\n
compassion.
\ni am with you. to help you bear this burden.<\/p>\n
i open my eyes
\ni find myself <\/p>\n
in a field of corn. sacred maiz
\nour mother.
\nall of us that are lonely. blood drips into corn,
\ninto life.<\/p>\n
pray for us now, holy mother, in the hour of our death…<\/p>\n
this ache has not gone away. <\/p>\n
a family of deer peeks out
\nthrough dusk.
\nthey feast on corn, our mother’s
\ngift.<\/p>\n
it is the full buck moon tonight. announcing
\nthe season of the deer’s growth.<\/p>\n
i dont know what to do about any of this. the ache tears at my throat, my heart, and most days i feel like i can’t get up, not even one more time. 40 years of this is enough.
\nand i am a lucky one.
\nso far. one kid texts me she loves me. the other asks me what’s for dinner.<\/p>\n
i am terrified for them. the only thing that calms me
\nare the whispers of the corn, our sacred mother-
\nto suffer is to be alive.
\nshare this burden.
\ncompassion.<\/p>\n
the family of deer turn as one
\nfly into the woods that wrap around the field.
\ni watch them until they disappear, then turn back to the field<\/p>\n
to find the moon, full
\nglowing
\non the green stalks
\ndancing with with fireflies, like twinkly lights.<\/p>\n
blood has given birth
\nto life. our ancestors
\nwhisper,
\nwe are here.<\/p>\n
we will bear this burden
\nwith you.<\/p>\n
holy mother, pray for us now and in the hour of our deaths-<\/p>\n
